Friendly
Cowick Rangers 2 - Pollington Panthers 1
Pollington Panthers played their first ever 11-a-side
game in a friendly against Cowick Rangers at Croda and soon realised that
playing on a full-sized pitch was a very different prospect from what they had
been used to previously. There were some good performances however, most notably
from Nick Howarth who scored the Panthers only goal of the game after a
fantastic solo run through the Cowick defence, and Tom Howard was busy and
energetic in defence as well. They were missing team captain, Jack Stocks, and
they struggled with the size of the pitch and the match duration, but the
players and manager alike realised that there were lessons to be learned, from
the result and things could only get better this season.

Pollington Panthers 2 - Selby Town 2
Pollington Panthers played their first 11-a-side league
game of the season at home and drew 2-2 with Selby Town in a tight game. Alex
Harrison and Alex Hinchcliffe scored the Panthers goals and they were unlucky
not to get a couple more with the good chances they created. So a reasonable
start to the league campaign and 2 points were in the bag.

Pollington Panthers 8 - Wistow Warriors 0
The Panthers took some time to get going in this
friendly game, but then they started passing the ball around and got some
confidence. Once they scored the first goal, they never looked like losing the
game and eventually destroyed their opponents with some great passing moves. The
final score was 8-0 with four goals from man-of-the-match Liam Deller, two from
Jack Stocks and two more from Alex Harrison.

Monk Fryston 9 - Pollington Panthers 1
Pollington Panthers were taught a footballing lesson by
a very accomplished Monk Fryston team. Fryston scored first, but Panthers struck
back quickly with a goal from in-form Alex Harrison to get back on level terms.
However the quality and fitness of the Monk Fryston team soon started to show
and they eventually ran out as 9-1 winners. Manager, Steve Ryan, was not
surprised by the result and knew there were more lessons that needed to be
learned from this game, and that the team would need to improve if they were to
have any chance in this league this season.

Howden Town 4 - Pollington Panthers 7
Pollington Panthers got their first 11-a-side win this
season in a tight game against Howden Town. Pollington opened the scoring after
just a minute with a great strike from right winger Liam Deller after a classy
through ball from Jack Stocks, but Howden struck back quickly to level the match
at 1-1. Then Howden twice went further ahead and led 3-1 until Deller scored
another great goal to bring it back to 3-2. However Howden replied almost
immediately to go 4-2 up at half time. After a confidence boosting half time
talk and the wind advantage with them in the second half, Pollington came out
with all guns blazing and were soon level at 4-4 with goals from Alex Harrison
and Deller for his hat-trick. Then the Panthers went ahead in the game with a
good finish by Alex Hinchcliffe from a clever throw-in by Nick Howarth. The
display was rounded off with a second goal for Harrison and a fourth for
man-of-the-match Deller. It was a good team performance with great contributions
from Reece Webster and Jess Bisby in defence and some good midfield passing from
Howarth, Ryan and Stocks.

Pollington Panthers 3 - Wheldrake 3
Pollington Panthers were unlucky not to win in a 3-3
draw at home to Wheldrake last weekend. Pollington took the lead early in the
first half with a good run and finish from Alex Harrison, but Wheldrake
equalised shortly afterwards with a good left foot shot. Wheldrake then took a
2-1 lead into the second half after the referee decided that a Pollington
defender had pushed a Wheldrake striker, however the ball was already in the
hands of the goalkeeper at the time and even the Wheldrake manager and
spectators thought it was a harsh decision. After a confidence boosting team
talk, Pollington continuously attacked the Wheldrake goal and created several
good chances, with one shot appearing to cross the goal line, but the referee
could not be sure and disallowed it. Pollington then got themselves level at 2-2
when Liam Deller scored his fifth goal in two games with a well struck right
foot shot. Pollington kept up the pressure looking for a winner, but were caught
on the break by Wheldrake who crossed the ball dangerously into the box for an
unlucky Jack Stocks to put the ball into his own net. Then with just a couple of
minutes to go, manager Steve Ryan pushed two of his defenders forward to get an
equaliser and the tactic was rewarded when hard-working man-of-the-match Tom
Howard scored his first goal of the season with a powerful strike from the edge
of the penalty box. A draw was the least that Panthers deserved from a well
fought game, and the players and parents should be proud of the effort they put
in to get back on level terms.

Goole Town Tigers 2 - Pollington Panthers 3
Pollington Panthers won a tight game 3-2 away at Goole
Town Tigers last weekend thanks to a late winner from Liam Deller. Panthers had
played some great football in the first half and took the lead with a close
range finish from man-of-the-match Max Ryan, when he pounced on a loose ball
after good work from Deller and Alex Harrison. They then went 2-0 up when
Alex Hinchcliffe finished off a nice passing move involving Jack Stocks,
Nick Howarth
and Harrison. The Panthers could easily have been 4 or 5 up at half time, but
the Tigers 'keeper made 3 or 4 fantastic saves from good shots by Deller. In the
second half Goole hit back quickly with a long range effort which the Panthers
goalkeeper, Rohan Fletcher, could do nothing about. This seemed to instil a lot
of confidence in the Tigers and they pressed forward and got a rather fortunate
equaliser when Fletcher and last defender Tom Howard both failed to deal with a
ball running back towards the goal and a Tigers striker nipped in and won the
ball to score into an empty net. The Panthers then tried hard to get back ahead
in the game and had several good chances with Ryan and Howarth going close
before Deller won the game for Pollington with a chip over the Tigers' keeper
with only a few minutes left on the clock.

Pollington Panthers 1 - Goole Town Tigers 2
The Panthers were knocked out of the cup this weekend
when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Goole Town Tigers, whom they had narrowly
beaten the previous weekend. Man-of-the-match, Alex Hinchcliffe scored the
Panthers only goal of the game in a disappointing match. The Panthers will need
to improve in their next match to get some confidence back after this defeat and
poor performance.

Altofts Juniors 3 - Pollington Panthers 4
Pollington Panthers won a very tight game away at
Altofts last weekend thanks to a late winner from Alex Harrison. Panthers had
played some good football in the first half and took the lead with a long range
shot from captain, Jack Stocks. They then had a host of chances to go further
ahead, with more good shots from Stocks and a quick reaction header from
Liam Deller which was brilliantly saved by the Altofts keeper. Deller then had two
more good chances saved by the outstanding goalie. But Altofts drew level just
before the end of the first half when they pounced on some indecision from the
Pollington defence. After half time the Panthers came out with all guns blazing
and went 2-1 up with a fine finish from Harrison after good play by Stocks and
Alex Hinchcliffe. They then deservedly went 3-1 up when Deller hooked a volley
in from a good corner by Stocks. Then Altofts fought back with two goals of
their own, one a brilliant free kick, and the match was square at 3-3 with just
a minute to go. But the Panthers didn't let their heads drop and fought hard to
try and get a winner from a game they felt they deserved to win, and they got
their reward with a fantastic low shot from just outside the box from Harrison,
which sent the travelling Panthers fans home happy.

Selby Town 2 - Pollington Panthers 6
Player-of-the-Match, Alex Hinchcliffe, scored a
fantastic hat-trick to help his side to a 6-2 victory away at Selby Town on
Saturday. The Panthers got off to a great start when they went 1-0 up after
Hinchcliffe pounced from close range when the keeper spilled an Alex Harrison
shot. They then went 2-0 up with a typical right wing run and shot from speedy
Liam Deller. Deller then made the game safe after receiving a chipped pass from
Max Ryan and skillfully rounding the keeper to score his second of the match and
make the score 3-0. The goal of the game was scored by Harrison whose thunderous
right foot shot from outside the box soared into the top right hand corner of
the net. To their credit, Selby Town did not give up and fought back with a goal
just before half time to make it 4-1 at the break. The second half saw plenty
more chances at goal and Hinchcliffe scored his second of the game with a flick
over the keepers head and a cool finish. Selby then scored a second to make it
5-2 before Hinchcliffe finished a fine personal display with an instinctive shot
on the turn to register his first hat-trick for the club.

Pollington Panthers 0 - Monk Fryston 2
The Panthers lost 2-0 at home in a very close game
against the runaway league leaders Monk Fryston. Fryston are used to winning
games by a comfortable margin, but they looked a bit lacklustre after the
Christmas break and they got a bit of a shock in this game and were quite lucky
to win the game at all. Even though Pollington defended well for most of the
game, and had a couple of decent attacks of their own, it was a couple of
defensive errors which led to the two Monk Fryston goals. Still the players
should be very proud of themselves because this was the first time that anyone
had managed to get this close in a match against Monk Fryston and put them under
some pressure. Man-of-the-match was Rohan Fletcher who had a great game, playing
in a new position at centre-back.

Pollington Panthers 3 - Ulleskelf 0
The Panthers beat their close league rivals with a
convincing 3-0 win. Pollington took an early lead when Max Ryan finished
coolly with a low right-foot shot from a good through-ball by Alex
Hinchcliffe. Ryan had an easy finish for his second when Liam
Deller drew the keeper towards him and passed square for Ryan to
score into an empty goal. Panthers stayed 2-0 up at half time thanks to some
strong defending by Rohan Fletcher and Nick Howarth and strong
midfield tackling by Alex Harrison and Player-of-the-Match Frankie
White on his debut. In the second half Ulleskelf had lots more possession
than in the first half and made some decent chances. However they could not get
past the Pollington defence and went 3-0 behind when Harrison received a
pass from Ryan just outside the box, jinked past two players, and having
got himself a small amount of space, cracked a right foot shot over the keeper
into the top right hand corner. The win would have been even bigger for the
Panthers if it had not been for a tremendous display from the Ulleskelf
goalkeeper who had a fantastic game.

Wheldrake 4 - Pollington Panthers 1
The Panthers missed several very good chances in the
first half and were somehow 3-0 down at half time. Wheldrake's first goal was a
big slice of luck, because what was supposed to be a cross was lost by the
Panthers keeper in the very bright and low winter sunshine and found its way
into the back of the net. However Pollington can have no complaints about the
next two goals as their defenders failed to close down the Wheldrake striker and
he let fly with two good goals from outside the box which sailed over the
keepers head. After an inspiring halftime team-talk the Panthers came out
fighting in the second half and got a goal back through Frankie White in
only his second game for the club. They then had more good chances and most of
the possession but just could not past the excellent Wheldrake keeper. Wheldrake
got a late fourth goal to seal the win and the Panthers must now try to forget
about this poor result and be ready for their next fixture against Howden Town.

Pollington Panthers 4 - Howden Town 0
Although the Panthers were missing some key players,
they managed to beat Howden Town 4-0 at the weekend. They got off to an early
lead when Max Ryan got on the end of a Liam Deller cross with a
header after a good one-two between Frankie White and Deller.
Deller then scored his first of the game with a low right foot after a sharp
turn, to take Panthers in 2-0 up at half-time. Howden had some good chances too
in the first half but were kept out by strong defending from Pollington
defenders Reece Webster, Tom Howard, Jess Bisby and
Rohan Fletcher. In the second half, man-of-the-match Nick Howarth
scored his first league goal of the season with a thundering right foot shot
from outside the box. Deller then finished off a fine display with his
second goal of the game, when he received a good long pass from Webster,
had his shot saved by the keeper, but was there to finish off the rebound.

Pollington Panthers 1 - Goole Town Tigers 0
The Panthers won a very tight game against a strong
Goole Town Tigers team on Saturday. Both sides wasted good chances to score in
the first half but were frustrated by some poor finishing and some very hasty
offside decisions, and the first half ended goalless. There were good defensive
performances from Reece Webster, Rohan Fletcher, and Nick
Howarth, while Frankie White and man-of-the-match Alex Harrison
were strong in midfield. Pollington came very close to taking the lead early in
the second half when Liam Deller had his shot deflected by the Tigers
keeper and as it bounced towards an empty goal it looked like it was going in
only for it to bounce away off the far post at the last minute. Deller
then got the winner for the Panthers with five minutes to go when his free kick
from outside the box, flew over the keeper and under the bar to send his
team-mates home happy with a 1-0 win.

Ulleskelf 1 - Pollington Panthers 0
The Panthers didn't deserve to lose at the weekend but
they did; to an unfortunate own goal. Pollington had several very good chances
in the first half but did not capitalise on them and although they dominated the
first half and could have been 2 or 3 nil up, the score remained 0-0 at half
time. In the second half it was a struggle into a strong wind and when a
defender's sliced clearance was heading for goal, the Panthers keeper couldn't
be sure whether the referee was going to count it as a back pass or not and so
he tried to clear it with his feet, but missed the ball and it went slowly
rolling into an open net. Despite the poor result, the Panthers played some
great football and there were some exceptional displays, especially from
Player-of-the-Match, Jessica Bisby, and Nick Howarth and
Reece Webster in defence. In midfield, Alex Harrison and Max Ryan
battled well and Liam Deller, Callum Simpson and Alex
Hinchcliffe had good games up front as well.
The Panthers were visibly hurt by this result but
manager, Steve Ryan expects them to pick themselves up and get a good
victory next weekend against Altofts at home.
